Finals Round One Selections & PL Match Preview
Ahh September. While many turn to the MCG in this month, a select few are looking toward the SNHC, as the crème de la crème of the Victorian hockey community take to the field to battle it out for the ultimate title – the PL premiership.
With an absolutely incredible 2017 home and away season now in our rear view mirror, it’s time to turn all of our attention to the the finals series ahead of us. Our first match sees us play Altona at 6PM this Saturday in the first qualifying final, while rivals Greensborough take on Doncaster in the second qualifying final earlier that day.
The last time we saw Altona in a finals series was 2014. A team full of optimism and hope, these guys had it all ahead of them. If memory serves, it was the first time in quite a while they had made the finals, and wanted to make it count while they were there. Unfortunately for them it would not be their year, being put to the sword 5-1 by us on our way to the granny. No doubt we’ll see Altona ready for a comeback this year, having not only made the HV extended eight, but picking up a double chance finishing inside the top four. This last place in the top four was hotly contested; Altona, Waverley, Powerhouse and Footscray all within just two points of each other, but in the end it was Altona who managed to confirm the double chance. Will they need it? My guess is yes. Both Camberwell and Burra have been a class above the rest of the competition this year, and I would be surprised to see Altona topple the minor premiers who have so much finals experience at this stage, while Altona have relatively little. I’m not ready to write them off however, Altona have been a quality side this season and are known to stick it to the best. MPL captain James Webster had this to say about the upcoming match:
After beating Altona during the year with a strong performance we meet them again. I believe it will be a different team than we previously played with the addition of Scanlon who has been dominant with his flicking this year. The key for our group is to play team/ passing hockey which doesn’t bring them into the contest.
The return of Aaron Kleinschmidt to our side was an exciting prospect. Our top goal scorer of the past few years has been away in Perth for the past year or so playing with the Kookaburras, and would no doubt be a handy in for the team and a problem for Altona’s defence. Unfortunately however he has sustained a minor ankle injury at training throughout the week, and thus will not be taking to the field for this match. However if we play the hockey we know we are capable of, this shouldn’t present an issue.
Expect high intensity, fast hockey, quite possibly featuring some cards and feeling, as both sides look to progress straight to week three. Altona will be keen to make amends for their 2014 loss, and will use short corner specialist Andrew Scanlon as best they can. We should see a steady, calm and collected Camberwell defence, a staple of our team over the past few years. Lots of good passing and team hockey will hopefully allow smooth transitions between our team lines and in turn plenty of problems for Altona.
Be sure to make it to the SNHC this Saturday evening for a cracking display of finals hockey. Details below.

At the halfway point of the season a finals berth seemed unlikely for Jason Reilly’s men. They had only amassed 11 points from 9 rounds. The outlook was bleak. But they got on a run in the back half of the season to take 20 points from 9 rounds. They had wins against 2nd, 3rd, 5th and a draw against 1st to seal an unlikely finals berth, culminating in a 4-1 demolition of Doncaster in round 18. They play old rivals Waverley at HHF in an elimination final on Saturday at 4pm. MPB can take confidence from a comprehensive 6-1 win in their round 13 clash. Can this rags to riches story continue?
